The new face of fashion has arrived.

And its Australia's own, DION LEE.

He debuted his collection at the Sdyney Opera House

during RAFW (Rosemount Australia Fashion Week) and received beyond great reviews.

Some even say that he was the one who "saved" RAFW. Pretty big deal.

Watching his show I got the same feeling I got as I first watched the Poker Face music video.

The, "oh shit this kid is gonna be huge" feeling. His show was flawless.
The architectural mini dresses,the ink blot computerized patterns, and the crystallized heels
are better than mostshown in New York and Paris.
This kid is going places, fast.

Today, February 27th, is my birthday.

My friends and I celebrated by driving

(while blaring sufficient amounts of bad music)

to Zentan at the Donovan House,

and feasting inside a secluded circle of curtains.

But it got me thinking.

There seems to be this odd sensation that comes with turning seventeen.

Up to sixteen it feels like your working to just get half way through your teens.

But once you hit sixteen, you still don't feel you've reached your destination.

Then seventeen rolls around, and you finally get your first taste of maturity, R-Rated movies.

But then you think; Who cares if I can get into R-Rated movies?

I've been sneaking in for the past three years anyways.

You're feeling like you're so much mature because finally get to do all these new, legal, things

but really, you've been doing all of these things for the past two or three years.

And then there's that odd fixation with the number seven.

But that's a completely different topic.

Oh right ... and I chopped off all my hair.

Catalina got me the best birthday present ever, a Fashionary.

Its this little sketch-book-type-thing that helps you learn to sketch really fast,

and its lists over 1500 different designers, what the different names for skirts, collars, jackets, etc. are,

and the best fonts and layouts to use for portfolios. Its genius.

I'll post about it later, don't worry.

Live and Let Die

Today, it was announced that the Alexander McQueen label

will continue even after the death of Lee Alexander McQueen
last week. Gucci Group, which has owned the label since 2000, stated that the
Fall 2010 show (which was completed only days before Lee's death)

will run as scheduled at Paris Fashion Week in March. However, they have not released

any decision as to who Lee's successor as head designer will be.

This really scares me.

I sincerely believe that the label should not continue.

Lee Alexander McQueen was a legendary designer and the ideas he had,

could only have come from him. No one else will ever be able to create what he produced.

I feel that if Gucci Group replaces him with a new head designer or a panel of designers,

there is no way they will be able to live up to McQueen.

He was one-of-a-kind designer with ideas that no other designer, young or old, could ever come up with.
His body of work is astounding, and will remain a part of fashion history forever, so why should we try
to continue with a new designer that will never do as amazing of a job as Lee did?
That was his company, and it should live and die with him.

Dreaming of a Lost Paradise

Today it snowed again.

Although it was just a few hours of flurries, it made me realize

how sick I am of all this snow. I just want it to be summer.
I want the easy clothes, the warm nights, the lightning bugs,
the melting ice cream, the sun-dried hair,

Long Live McQueen

One of my all time favorite designers and one of my biggest inspirations,

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN, was found dead in his London home on Thursday morning,
only hours before the start of the McQ fashion show at New York Fashion Week.

The cause of his death is uncertain at this time but my thoughts
go out to his family during this difficult period.

He changed the face of fashion forever and put London on the map as a fashion capital. His love for anything over the top and his attention to detail helped him create some of the most innovative and extravagant runway shows to ever be witnessed. He was an out-of-the-box thinker and morphed his models into anything he could dream up, including sea creatures, witches, mental patients and feminine football players. McQueen took every trend, every era, every season and twisted it into his own one-of-a-kind vision, thus creating a body of work more powerful

than any young designer can dream of achieving.

My friend Vivi ventured over to my house in the snow yesterday

and tried on the dress that I made last week.

Catalina had the fancy camera that she took from the

Photography classroom at school and we went outside

in the frigid cold to take pictures.

Vivi, with her strong Croatian skin,

didn't seem to mind the cold and modeled perfectly.
The dress is a silver taffeta strapless dress (made by me), the scarf is Urban Outfitters
and the shoes are BCBG from my sister's closet.

Don't Stop Me Now

Not even the absurd amounts of snow falling from the sky

could stop Catalina and I from making fashion.

While we were at Urban Outfitters on Monday,

there was a 50% off all sale items.

We bought a Screen Printing kit and

tried our hands at printing our own t-shirts.

We had a little trouble the first few times around but

managed to get it right by the fifth t-shirt.

Our friend Vivi stopped by and documented our creative afternoon,
and we took some pictures in the three feet of snow
wearing our creations.

One of my all-time favorite movies is The Wizard of Oz.

Way back in the days of elementary school, I used to watch it everyday when I got home from school.

But one day I got scared of the flying monkeys and didn't watch it again for a couple of years.

I'm still a little weirded out by the monkeys, but I'll watch it every so often.

But when I stumbled upon this editorial from Vogue December 05

It's been snowing for over a day now.

If I'm correct, we have over 2 feet of snow in total.

I've been stuck in my house with nothing to do,

(except make some dresses, which I'll post about later)

and nothing to eat besides Rice Krispies and frozen Trader Joe's pizza.

In an effort to save myself from boredom,

I took Ringo out into the snow and took some pictures.

The snow is so deep. It's piling up on top of cars,

breaking branches off of trees, and freezing Ringo's paws off.

Even though its beautiful, I'm kinda sick of all the snow
we've been getting lately.

Lets hope school is closed on Monday!

The 52nd Annual Grammy Awards took place last night

at the Staples Center in LA and despite the poor choice of winners

by the Academy (eh hem.... Taylor Swift winning Album of the year),
the dresses and gowns that the celebrities showed up in were killer.
The Superstars (Gaga and Beyonce) rocked it harder than ever

but the industry newbies (Lea Michele and Keri Hilson)

gave them a run for their money.

Here are my favorites of the night:

As for the best performance of the night, it was obviously Gaga.

She had a oversized green sequin leotard, duranged back-up dancers,
a huge "Fame Factory" set complete with a fire pit,

a double-ended piano with her signature "claw" hands growing out of it,

and a little someone I like to call, Sir Elton John.

Suck on that, Taylor.

Oh and did I mention that Gaga's dress is a

one of a kind made especially by

Mr. Armani?

Nicholas Meet Alice, Alice Meet Nicholas

Printemps, the fabulous department store in Paris hired

Mr. Kirkwood to design shoes and style a window display inspired by Alice in Wonderland.

Knowing Nicholas and his amazing work (see, "Kickin' It With Kirkwood"),

he was destined for this assignment.

What he turned out was an amazing pair of heels,

that not only screamed Alice but also managed to keep the Kirkwood signature look.

And they were piled high with Alice memorabilia.

Men's Fashion Week

Men's Fashion Week took place last week over in

those small cities in Europe, Paris and Milan.

The designers this year either went two routes in producing their show.

They either went traditional and classic

(well ... as traditional as these designer can get)

with tons of impeccably made suits and extravagant top coats.

They took the out-of-the-box route

with snake-skin suits, jackets that seem bulletproof and the occasional

spalter of fake blood on the models face.

Here are some of my favorites from Paris and Milan.

MONCLER GAMME BLEU

MCB took winter-wear to a whole new level this year.

The show started with all the models in matching pajamas sleeping on cots.

The show progressed into the models being awaken by a master and each model changing into their runway look. The clothes were insane. All the garments look like something a rich European heir would wear when they go skiing in the Swiss Alps. Not only were there tons and tons of layers on each model, each layer of clothing was made to absolute perfection. Oh how I wish I could wear these when I go skiing ... or just when its cold outside.

DSQUARED2

Dean and Dan went back to their Canadian (hockey) roots this season.

They took their European models, "beat up" their faces with some fake blood and make up

and put them in some high-class punk sportswear.

Each model looked so angry coming down the runway

(which I guess was what they were going for) that I was scared two of them would start a

brawl when they passed each other. Luckily, they didn't.

And really, all I want in life is that t-shirt that looks like it has Dean and Dan on it.

PAUL SMITH

Paul Smith was the master of mixing urban street wear with high status clothing.
If Raquel Reed and Chuck Bass had a child, he would wear Paul Smith.
His mixing of plaid was outstanding and his colored suits were gorgeous.
Each model looked a different age, which goes to show how all of his clothes can work for anyone.
Oh and that blue plaid balzer? Want it more than Sims 3.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN

Mr. McQueen took us through a Celtic adventure this season.

His inspiration for this immense collection came from the
lives of fishermen who inhabit the north and south poles.
His love for skulls was more apparent than ever in his collection titled "An Bailitheoir Cnámh (meaning, "The Bone Collector"). There were skull-and-bones patterned suits, huge skull and crossbones knitted into sweaters, snakeskin suits and shoes (à la, "Plato's Atlantis")
and face masks galore.

BURBERRY PRORSUM

Take fourty-four London hipsters, add a pinch of leather and a couple doses of fur

and bring to boil in the Russian military for six years.

This collection was by far my favorite of the season. To start, the coats were absolutely incredible. There was everything from over-sized wool topcoats to fur peacoats to double-collared shearlings. Then there were the boots. The walked-in, lived-in, worn-in leather boots that I'd die for.

In the end, this collection was nothing short of superb.

Lately I've been so focused on Men's Fashion Week (it was last week)

that I started to get annoyed looking at the endless list of established designers on gq.com.

I really needed some fresh and undiscovered talent in my brain.

So, I decided to go on a little adventure through some fashion school runway shows

and I stumbled upon this amazing collection of some student's designs at

Beckmen's College of Design in Sweden.

I have to admit, these clothes are crazy innovative for design school students.

Sara and I went to the MONSTER BALL tour last night

at Radio City Music Hall.

It was insane.

So much dancing.

and drinking.

and inappropriate men.

IT WAS CRAZY.

people asked to take a picture with her.
I'm not kidding.

Lately I've been living sort of a NYC lifestyle (wake up at 2, shower, go out, come home at midnight, and go to sleep at 2) and it made me start to think of how much I love that city. It's an urban mecca for any professional industry and if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere. 2009 was, more than anything, a year focused on finding the new. What's new? What's fresh? What's different? And more than anyone else, the person than fulfilled our desire for something new, was Lady Gaga. She took the music industry and then the entire world by storm. She brought us into a crazy dimension full of power, emotion, and creativity, and wasn't worried about what people thought of it. Her debut album The Fame went platinum back in May and spawned The Fame Ball Tour. Her album was also the first debut album, in history, to produce four #1 singles. She preformed in an astounding amount of television performances including The MTV Video Music Awards, The American Music Awards, Gossip Girl, So You Think You Can Dance, American Idol, The Tonight Show With Jay Leno, Saturday Night Live, and The 57th Miss Universe Pageant. In November she continued her pop music reign with The Fame Monster, an extension to her debut album and took off on her world-wide tour, The Monster Ball Tour. She also appeared in several magazines like, Elle and V Magazine. Not only did she amaze the world with her music, she kept everyone guessing with her fashion. She can and will wear anything she wants, whether it's a lace body suit, an Alexander McQueen couture sequin piece or a giant rotating metal sphere. Her music video for Bad Romance is probably the most fashion-forward music video ever; it had latex body suits, (fake) polar bear capes, and plenty of Alexander McQueen shoes and sequins to go around. No matter what anyone says, Lady Gaga is one hell of a creative and talented woman, and I'm positive we'll see more of this pop culture sensation in 2010.

UNIQLO has this new line of Heattech items that keep you warm all through the winter months. Each item is composed of seven elements (heat generation, heat retention, odor control, stretchable comfort, quick dry, anti-static and non-deforming) that makes them the best winter clothes to hit the market in years. I was so amazed that I just had to buy the Heattech Wool Peacoat.

UNIQLO is also having a spectacular sale to celebrate it's 25th Birthday. There's a new promotion on a different item everyday until the 24th. Better get up to Soho and start piling up on amazing Japanese clothes.

This Saturday, while in NYC, Julianne and I ventured down to Bleeker and Perry in the West Village to go to the Marc Jacobs Accessories store. God, I love it there. Its like an explosion of a Crayon box on the inside. I went crazy. I bought more items than I would ever need, and a few more. Just beware of the line, its never less than 30 people long.

Last weekend, we took a really fancy camera from the photography classroom at school and decided to take pictures of my dress with it. What we weren't expecting was the ridiculous amount of work it took to get these photos.

To start, when we arrived at the church, there was no parking, so we parked illegally and one of us had to stand by the car. Then when we finally got to Malcom X Park, the camera battery died. No big problem, we had a Tom Tom and we could find the nearest starbucks and charge up the battery for a little while. Wrong. Jane (the GPS Girl) told us that the nearest starbucks was in Annapolis. 34 miles away. Luckily, we drove two blocks down the street and there was a tiny starbucks on the corner. After charging up the battery, we took some pictures in an old chair by the bus stop and went back to Malcolm X. We got some pretty good photos despite the odd sightings of old women, creepy men playing frisbee and the occasional martial artists walking up stairs backwards.

Here We Go Again

Christian came back to DC this past weekend for a talk/signing for his new book, Fierce Style: How to Be Your Most Fabulous Self. And yet again I decided to make a dress to show him. Luckily, this time I had more than 20 hours to make it. After I was finished, the dress turned out to be much more, umm how do I put this, WELL MADE. It was a fully lined, black, strapless, printed dress with an zipper belt. I loved the way it turned out, even though Eirinn couldn't breath.

Oh and his book was amazing. Go buy it.

This past Friday was no more than a real life Project Runway scenario, all to impress my favorite winner of PR, Christian Siriano. He decided it would be fun to make an appearance at the local mall (for I have no idea what reason) and I wanted to impress him so that he would maybe hire me as an intern in the summer. I had about 20 hours to make a dress completely from raw mens suiting fabric that would be good enough to impress Christian.

At 8 o'clock, three hours after I started, I had the dress in pieces, without any lining, and as long as a nuns dress. As I started the lining, Catalina sat there and studded (or as we call it, "bedazzled") the dress like she was getting paid. She wasn't. At midnight, Catalina was finishing the studs and I had just finished the lining. For some reason after that, my hands and the sewing machine were no longer friends. I sewed the side seam of the lining to the dress and, oops, screwed it up. Ripped it out. Tried again. Oops. Screwed up. Ripped it out. Tried again. Win.
Saturday morning, I tried it on my model Lindsay, and of course, the sides had been taken in too much. So it was 11 o'clock, Christian went on in two hours and I had a dress that was too small, had no zipper, and no hem. My life was coming to an end. I took out those seams, redid them and sewed like I was on crack. I finished the dress at 12:57. Yes, three minutes before Christian walked on stage.
We drove to the mall and luckily Christian was still sitting there talking away, and we decided to switch Eirinn, my friend that came along, into the dress. Surprisingly, it fit her much better than Lindsay. We talked to Christian, he loved it, I asked if he needed a summer intern and he asked for my email. Hopefully that means he'll email me.
Christian is coming back to DC on Saturday (10/10) for a book signing and I'm making another dress to show to him. Better start working.
